STANDARDIZATION OF RADICLE EMERGENCE TEST TO PREDICT SEED GERMINATION, VIGOUR AND FIELD EMERGENCE IN RICE SEED LOTS (Oryza sativa L.) cv. CO 51

Abstract

An experiment was made to evaluate and correlate the radicle emergence test to predict the seed germination, vigour and field emergence in ten different seed lots of rice.  The results showed that the significant differences are observed in physiological (speed of germination, germination, root length, shoot length, dry matter production and vigour index) and biochemical parameters (electrical conductivity of seed leachate and dehydrogenase activity) in different seed lots. The radicle emergence test can be used to nearly predict field emergence compared to standard germination and other vigour parameters. In the present investigation, the seed vigour was classified into three groups viz., high, medium and low vigour based on field emergence, radicle emergence and Mean germination time (MGT) relationships. When field emergence was exceeding 83 per cent, the radicle emergence was>

95 per cent (MGT: < 34 h) and it would be considered as “high vigour”; when field emergence was between 80 - 83 per cent, the radicle emergence was between 85 - 95 percent 

(MGT: 34 - 35 h) and it would be considered as “medium vigour”; and when field  emergence fell below 80 per cent the seeds are considered as “low vigour” with radicle emergence was < 85 per cent (MGT: > 35 h). The radicle emergence test (2mm radicle length) was highly significant negative correlation of MGT (-.978**) followed by mean just germination time (-.959**) and electrical conductivity (-.924**) and It was highly significant positive correlation of germination (.957**) followed by dehydrogenase activity (.952**) and field emergence (.929**). Relationship between seed vigour parameters and  radicle emergence per cent (1mm and 2mm radicle length) were evaluated. Highest R2Values are observed in 2mm radicle emergence per cent (R2 Values: MJGT = 0.9202, MGT = 0.9560, EC = 0.8533, DA = 0.9071, GER = 0.9165 and FE = 0.8584) compared with 1mm radicle emergence per cent (R2 Values: MJGT = 0.7939, MGT = 0.7901, EC = 0.8698, DA = 0.8553, GER = 0.8126 and FE = 0.8512) for most of the seed vigour parameters in ten different seed lots. Moreover the 2mm radicle emergence can be used for a quick evaluation to assess the seedquality.
